Marine Corps League Scholarship Program
Academic Year 2010-2011

SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY

An applicant for the program must:

1. Be a high school senior participating in either a Marine or Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program at a Hawaii public school, or;

2. Be a high school senior who is the child of a Marine or Sailor stationed aboard Marine Corps Base, Hawaii, and;

3. Have been accepted as a full-time, first year bachelor’s degree seeking undergraduate at an accredited college or a post-high school technical or trade school, and;

4. Maintained a cumulative grade point average of not less than 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

PRIMARY SELECTION CRITERIA

1. Academic achievement, including grades, rank in class, standardized test scores and achievement test scores;

2. Community/extracurricular involvement;

3. Leadership;

4. Participation in specific activities;

5. Awards and recognition;

6.  Personal attributes.

WHAT CAN THIS SCHOLARSHIP BE USED FOR?

1.  To pay for tuition at trade or technical school;

2.  To pay tuition for two or four year colleges and universities.

HOW MANY SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE AND HOW MUCH ARE THE SCHOLARSHIPS WORTH?

For the Academic year 2010-2011, the Scholarship Committee will award one scholarship to a senior from each of the four Navy/Marine JROTC Programs on Oahu.  Four additional scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors whose active duty Navy or Marine Corps parent is stationed aboard Marine Corps Base, Hawaii.

Students who earn scholarships through the Marine Corps League, Aloha Detachment Scholarship Program are eligible to compete for a renewal of their scholarship subject to available funding.  Announcements will be posted on the Aloha Detachment web site.

Scholarships awarded for the academic year 2010-2011 will be $2,000 each. 

WHEN AND WHERE ARE APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE?

Application materials for the program are posted on line at the Marine Corps League, Aloha Detachment web site (here). Applications may also be obtained from the JROTC Instructors at high schools that host Marine or Navy JROTC Programs, Kalaheo, Campbell, Radford or Castle, or from a member of the Marine Corps League.

WHAT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION MUST I INCLUDE WITH MY APPLICATION?

1.  High school transcripts;

2.  College/school acceptance letters;

3.  Letters of recommendation.

WHEN IS THE APPLICATION DEADLINE?

The application deadline for the program is April 16th of the current school year.

WHEN WILL SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS BE NOTIFIED?

Students will be notified that they have been selected not later than May 7th.  Notification for JROTC Cadets will be made through the JROTC Instructors.  The children of Marines and Sailors will be notified by a member of the Scholarship Committee. 

HOW AND WHEN WILL THE AWARDS BE DISTRIBUTED?

Awards will be presented at the respective high school awards assemblies.
